Innovative ideas from UGC to curb ragging in the colleges

In a recent letter to the vice-chancellors of the universities, UGC asked the educational institutes to install the alarm bells in the campus in order to curb and keep check on the menace of ragging in the institutions. In the letter UGC also suggested various other measures which can be useful in stopping the menace of ragging in the educational institutions.Some of these suggested measures are short films, documentaries, counseling and surprise inspections of the educational institutes. Recently two students from the National Law Institute University (NLIU) in Bhopal filed a complaint against their seniors on the UGC’s anti-ragging helpline saying that in the name of ragging they were abused sexually and were forced to consume alcohol. “You are requested to step up anti-ragging mechanism by way of adequate publicity through various mediums; constitution of anti-ragging committee and anti-ragging squad, setting up of Anti Ragging Cell, installing CCTV cameras at vital points, Anti- Ragging workshops, updating all websites with nodal officers complete details, alarm bells etc.” said the notice.UGC also warned all the institutes to take the anti-ragging mechanism seriously. “If any institution fails to take adequate steps to prevent ragging or does not act in accordance with these Regulations or fails to punish perpetrators of incidents of ragging suitably, it will attract punitive action against itself by the UGC,” said the notice. The notice also directed the institutions to do regular interactions with the students in order to keep the check on the ragging and to identify any trouble triggers in the institute.On May 29, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar also said that ragging in any form needs to be completely eliminated from the institutions and for this purpose an anti-ragging mobile app was also launched by the UGC, which will help the students to register complaint against ragging.
