UGC New policy to detect and remove plagiarism from Academic research

The University Grants Commission (UGC) released the new Draft UGC (Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2017. The main aim of the draft is to create awareness among students regarding the responsible conduct of the research during their PhD and M.Phil degree and to prevent the plagiarism in the academic writings. The draft also seeks the institutions to develop systems and institutional mechanisms to create awareness about the academic integrity among the students. The draft directs every higher education institution to instruct the students, faculty and staff members about the proper attribution, seeking the permission of the author and acknowledging the source wherever necessary. The institutes have also been directed to implement adequate software measures and other mechanisms for ensuring that the submitted work is free from plagiarism.Under the new draft, students are also required to sign undertaking that the documents and work they are submitting are original and free from plagiarism and institutes are required to submit the soft copies of the M.Phil. and PhD dissertations on INFLIBNET.Institutes have also been directed to form Academic Misconduct Panel (AMP), which will investigate any report or allegation of the plagiarism and will submit the report to the Plagiarism Disciplinary Authority (PDA) of the institute.
