For using gender-insensitive language students in the UK universities to lose marks

According to a new rule in one of the Britain’s well-known university, students can lose their marks if they fail to comply with the gender-sensitive norms of the university which can impact the words like ‘mankind’ and 'layman’.According to FOI (Freedom of Information) request students who are enrolled in religious activism course at the University’s school of social science have been issued a warning that if they fail to use the gender neutral language their grades will suffer. This will impact the words like “mankind”, “layman” and “sportsmanship” which will be replaced by the “humankind”, “layperson” and fairness respectively. The guidelines read as follows: “Language is important and highly symbolic. I thus expect you to be aware of the powerful and symbolic nature of language and use gender-sensitive formulations. Failure will impact your mark.” A senior lecturer from the college said “language is powerful and they place a high emphasis on gender-neutral language on our courses. If any student uses language which is not deemed gender-neutral, he/she will be offered feedback as to why."However, Fran Furedi, emeritus professor of sociology at Kent University does not agree with this new point of view and termed this as 'linguistic policing’ and 'outlook of the procrustean.’
