By polishing the shoes students protested against the Punjab University Fee hike

Standing against the fee hike in Punjab University, students of the university protested against the fee hike but this time not by using violence as a means but by polishing the shoes of the fellow students. This peaceful protest was organized by the group of students who owns allegiance to the NSUI. The protest was organized in order to press their demands for the rollback of the fee hike. The University is witnessing the protests against fee hike on regular basis from the students in one form or another. Previously, in a protest organized on April 12 by the students, violent clashes between the police and students were witnessed and many students were also arrested by the police foe disturbing and causing damage to the university property.“We today tried another mode of protest against the fee hike. Students today polished shoes of other students, bystanders and passersby outside the PU Vice Chancellor’s office,” said Siya Minocha, PU student and member of National Students Union of India (NSUI).“We wanted PU authorities to listen to us on what we have to say. It has been several days, nobody from PU talked to us,” she further added.During the protest students charged Rs 10 per pair of shoes which they polished. “We charged Rs. 10 per person during an hour long protest. If they (PU authorities) want our money then we can collect it in whatever manner we can,” she said. She also said students will not back down and will continue to adopt new methods of peaceful protests until their demands are met.University has been facing financial problems from quite some time and Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Badal will hold a meeting with the Punjab University Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover today, in order to discuss the issue of financial support.The state finance Minister o April 17 said “ the Punjab government will try and help the cash strapped university which is facing a financial crisis. However, the state will take any decision regarding the financial support to PU only after the Amarinder Singh government comes out with a white paper on the state’s finances.”
